Anthony Carte de Visite Confederate Civil War General Sydney Johnson

Friend of Jefferson Davis and before the advancement of Robert E. Lee, Sydney Johnson was thought by Davis to be the best general in the country. Killed early in the war on April 6, 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh. His loss recorded and remaining as the highest-ranking casualty suffered by either side.

Back mark: "E. and H.T. Anthony - 501 Broadway, New York, Manufacturers of the best Photographic Albums." Gold double-line border, corners clipped, as was commonly done to CDV's for inserting them into the paper frames of albums. A few small, light surface scratches visible under magnification, but otherwise appears to be in fine condition. Inscribed, "Sydney Johnson" in pencil below the image.
